YouTube has introduced guidelines allowing record labels to request the removal of songs that use AI-generated versions of artists' voices. The platform's new tool enables music distributors to identify content mimicking an artist's unique voice.

This surge in AI-generated music, stemming from advancements in generative AI technology, includes instances like "Heart on My Sleeve," featuring AI-generated vocals imitating Drake and the Weeknd. Despite criticisms from Universal Music Group, the song remains accessible on YouTube.

YouTube plans to test these new controls with selected labels and distributors before a wider implementation, involving participants in early AI music experiments using generative AI tools. Moreover, YouTube is updating its privacy complaint process to enable users to report deepfakes and AI-generated content imitating identifiable individuals. However, exceptions might apply to parodies or deep fakes of public figures.

Creators uploading content on YouTube must disclose any realistic-looking manipulated or synthetic material, including AI-generated content. Persistent violations of these guidelines could lead to content removal or advertising payment suspension.

YouTube emphasizes the importance of these AI guidelines, particularly concerning content discussing sensitive topics like elections or public health crises.

In a separate context, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced stricter policies for political advertisers using AI in their ads.

Recent concerns about deep fakes impacting public trust were underscored by the UK government's warning, particularly referencing fabricated audio clips involving Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, circulating on social media.
