Tillu Square, starring Siddhu Jonnalagadda and Anupama Parameswaran, has surpassed all pre-release expectations, achieving a phenomenal run during its opening weekend. The film's success extends beyond India, as it is poised to become a blockbuster in the overseas market as well. The latest milestone sees the film crossing the 50 crores gross mark at the worldwide box office.
The makers of Tillu Square are ecstatic to see their film featured in the popular US daily, Deadline. They expressed their gratitude, stating, "Thrilled to see #TilluSquare in the top 10 USA box office and featured by @DEADLINE! A huge thank you from all of us at Prathyangira Cinemas for the spotlight and support. Your recognition brings us immense joy!"
In a rare occurrence, both a Tollywood and a Bollywood film made the top ten at the box office. The continued success of horror and Indian films has been instrumental in sustaining the box office amid the challenges of the Covid era. This week's top ten includes the blockbuster Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, although with fewer overall wide releases due to Hollywood strikes.
Noteworthy among these films is Late Night With The Devil by Australian duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes, starring David Dastmalchian. The film, which follows a late 1970s talk show host's quest for ratings on Halloween night, grossed $2.2 million in its second week, bringing its total to $6.2 million.
Tillu Square marks the first weekend in about three months with two Indian films in the top ten. Debuting at number 8, the Telugu-language romantic crime caper directed by Mallik Ram is a sequel to the 2022 film DJ Tillu. Siddhu Jonnalagadda reprises his role, with Anupama Parameswaran playing the female lead in this twisty thriller that rocked 450 theaters for a gross of $1.83 million.
In ninth place is FunAsia Filmsâ Crew, a Bollywood film that opened to an estimated $1.49 million at 485 theaters. Directed by Rajesh Krishnan, the film follows a group of air hostesses from Mumbai on a comic caper adventure in pursuit of their dreams. It stars Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Kapil Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, and Pooja Bhamrrah.
Indian films have long been a staple at the U.S. box office, appealing to both local audiences and sometimes crossing over to a wider audience, as seen with RRR. Their significance has grown post-pandemic, especially considering the current limited release schedule. While Indian films typically have a short theatrical run in North America, new releases continue to keep audiences engaged, ensuring a steady flow of content.
