Analysis:
Thandel is based on real life incidents took place in Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh. The film revolves around the lives of fishermen of that region. The film tried to showcase the plight of the fishermen who undergo huge struggles to get their bread and butter. The film's story is simple and predictable at times. However, director Chandoo tried to build an effective screenplay.
Apart from the main plot, there are decent subplots and one of them is the romantic track between Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi. The love story between the lead pair is impressive. Chandoo has created neat characterisations that work well on the big screen.
Chandoo Mondeti has established the melodrama part pretty well. Emotionally, the film scores brownie points but towards the second half, the film falls flat and there are issues with the transitions within the drama. The character arcs are impressive and Chandoo could have worked more on the second half to make it appealing. The film has an amazing climax but the scenes that take us there are boring.
Performances wise, it is Naga Chaitanya's best. He tried to display both strength and vulnerability at a time. At the same time, he worked on his dialogue delivery where he spoke the Srikakulam dialect. His hard work is visible. Sai Pallavi played her part effortlessly. She also caught the dualect and delivered yet another impressive performance. The rest of the cast supported the main cast well. Music wise, DSP supported the director's vision. All the songs are good on the screen and the background score elevated the emotion on the screen. Shamdat’s cinematography is excellent and the editing could have been sharper. The dialogues are good and the production design is amazing.
Verdict:
Thandel is a film with some great story arc but the shortcomings within it bring down the experience of watching. Both Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi shine big time in the film, based on real life incidents. The romantic drama works out well but some portions appear to be boring. On the whole, it is a one-time watch!
