[VIDEO] Mother meets dead daughter through virtual reality

In an amazing sight, a South Korean mother is seen 'reuniting' with her daughter who died 3 years ago using virtual reality.

The South Korean documentary, called 'Meeting You', screened the emotional reunion of the mother with her seven-year-old daughter, who passed away from an unnamed disease in 2016, for a short period through virtual reality technology. The digitized version of Ms. Jang's daughter Nayeon was created using images collected from a child model and from pictures of Nayeon. The mother wore gloves that allowed her to see, hear, and touch the digital version of her daughter, while the TV program simultaneously depicted scenes of the real world to the audience, that included Nayeon's father and her two siblings.

Following the temporary reunion, Ms. Jang narrated her experience of meeting her daughter yet again. "I wanted to touch my daughter. I tried to hold her hand and stroke her face. Maybe it's a real paradise. I met Nayeon, who called me with a smile, for a very short time, but it's a very happy time. I think I've had the dream I've always wanted," she stated.

Claiming that the experiment raises ethical concerns, a professional reportedly mentioned, "Just because it is possible to use technology to virtually bring people back to life to meet with those grieving, it doesn't mean we should. One of the main concerns is the right of the deceased. Would they want to be digitally brought back to life? Who controls the words that they say? Could this be manipulated to force conversations that they wouldn't have agreed to? The further concern is how long do you keep that relationship alive? Is it a one-time opportunity to enable closure or do you then prolong that relationship?"

"There is no doubt that this could help those grieving to provide closure in a one-time event but it raises huge ethical concern, ignoring the rights of the deceased and also manipulation of the mind," she further added.
