Sonali Bendre opens up about mafia influence on 90s Bollywood

Back in the 90s, Sonali Bendra was one of the most popular actresses of Bollywood. After making her debut in 1994, she had starred in blockbusters like 'Diljale', 'Sarfarosh', 'Hum Sath Sath Hain' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho' to name a few. Recently, Sonali made an appearance on 'The Ranveer Show', a YouTube podcast, and talked about the influence of mafia on Bollywood in the 90s.

The actress revealed that underworld often used to finance films and they also had control over casting and production of these projects. "Many clean sources were financing films. But, there was not a proper, formal industry status. So, there was a lot of unregulated finance coming in as well, and banks will not give it to you. So, that limit was there," Sonali stated.

The actress further shared that she always tried to stay clear of filmmakers who were linked to the underworld and that she ended losing some roles due to pressure from the mob. She shared, "There were times when I was supposed to do a role and it went to someone else because someone called them up. But then the director or the co-actor will call you and say ‘I have that pressure and I can’t do anything about it’ And, I understand."
