Amidst the development of a new multiversal saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio faced a challenging year both in terms of public relations and financial turmoil. Kang, expected to be the next major villain post-Avengers: End Game, led to chaos when actor Jonathan Majors was embroiled in controversies. This put the creators in a dilemma, pondering whether to retain him as the face of the forthcoming antagonist or seek a replacement.

Marvel execs contemplated a potential pivot to a Doctor Doom narrative after Majors encountered legal trouble earlier in the year, raising concerns about his role as Kang in light of the impending domestic violence trial. The idea to replace Kang with Doctor Doom was discussed as a backup plan due to Majors' situation, even though the actor maintains his innocence. However, Marvel continues to explore alternative options considering the impact on Majors' reputation and potential trial outcomes.

Issues extended beyond the actor's controversy to the film's performance, which failed to generate the anticipated buzz and box office revenue. Despite Jonathan Majors' commendable performance, it couldn't offset the movie's lackluster storyline. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, with a $200 million budget, grossed approximately $476 million worldwide upon its recent release.

Marvel has yet to address the reports and hasn’t officially announced plans regarding Majors' future as Kang in the MCU. Doctor Doom, though not yet integrated into the MCU, is anticipated to feature in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, slated for future release.
