Saturday, August 1, 2020 • Tamil Comments

Amar Singh, who played a stellar role in the Samajwadi Party before he was expelled from it in 2010, passed away on Saturday at the age of 64. The former Rajya Sabha member succumbed to a prolonged kidney-related ailment.

Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore had been treating him for almost 7 months. National media reports say that he had undergone a kidney transplant in 2009 and in 2018.

Condolences are pouring in from all quarters. Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy tweeted, "Amar Singh MP and a person I have known for long, died today. Although he was mostly with SP, he made friends across the spectrum of political parties. My condolences to his family."

BJP leader Baijayant Jai Panda tweeted, "Just heard of the passing of #AmarSingh Ji. I first met him in 1997 when he accompanied the then PM to Odisha, & last a couple of years ago when he dropped by for tea. Like him or not, for years he was a player, with undeniable & immense influence in India's politics. Om Shanti."

In 2010, Amar Singh and his political student and yesteryear actress Jaya Prada were asked to leave the party by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
