Extreme rainfall and floods are not a new thing to the people in coastal Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Michaung devasted Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Chengalpet a few days ago with the highest rainfall in the last 47 years. People are still stranded in many places and the rescue work will happen all this week.
However, life after floods is gonna be harder than the rescue work. It will take a long time for the affected people to return to normalcy. They have to keep a few things in their mind. One of the most affected things in the floods is cars. We have some information about keeping the insurance valid for a fully drowned car.
The first thing you should do if your vehicle gets submerged in rainwater or washed away by rainwater is to be patient. Do not rush to the car and try to open the car door. If you open the car door when there is flood water, the whole car will likely get inside. Do not attempt to start the car at the same time.
After draining the water, you should take your car to the nearest mechanic or your car showroom service centre. But before that, take a photo on your cell phone so you know how deep the flood water was in your car. It will be convenient to show this to the mechanic and the insurance company.
Take a photo of the car while it is flooded and send it to the insurance company to let the insurance company know that your car has suffered such damage. Your first duty is to notify the insurance company in some way, either by phone or e-mail. After that, if your vehicle is damaged by the flood water, you should go to the police and file a complaint.
Accordingly, the police will receive your complaint and register the first investigation report. Based on this, the insurance companies will pay for the damages to your car and this FIR is required only if your car is completely damaged. After that, contact the insurance company with proper documents and proofs. Then, take the car to the service center without starting it and have a thorough inspection of what happened to the car and let the insurance company know about it.
That way, the insurance companies will come forward to give you an estimate of how much it will cost to repair the damage to the car. If there is too much damage the company may decide to scrap the car completely and give you the full insurance money. For this, the representative of the insurance company will visit your vehicle in person and collect all the information about the damage caused to it.
If you are not satisfied with the amount offered by the insurance company after inspecting the damage to the vehicle, you can negotiate with the company to get a higher amount. The money will be given to you only after your final acceptance. Note: Do not start the car under any circumstances. Therefore, if the engine breaks down, the insurance amount will not be available Many experts have confirmed that you shouldn't try starting your car after the floods.
